New players may want to set up any USB controllers they might have, just plug in your game pad and go to - go to FFXI-Config (You nede to be out of game when you do this)
My setup with a PS2 controller:
Menus - (or Triangle)
Select/Confirm - Button 3 (or X)
Cancel - Button 2 (or O)
Active Window / Window Options - Button 4 (Or Square)
Autorun - R1
L2 for ctrl Macros, R2 for alt Macros
Heal / Lock Target L3
You'll need to callabrate the analog sticks and use the D-Pad for menus
You do that over at "Directional Control Devices" to the right.

Get the missions from the gate guards next to the Warlocks.

If not a whole lot of people are in-game.

- Make sure you get signet so you get a defense bonus, crystals will drop and you get conquest points. It lasts 1 hour I believe, so refresh it whenever you come across a warlock for your nation.
- Turn in your adventurer's coupon for extra starting gil.
- Equip your weapon if you are a melee class, use your scroll to learn the spell permanently if you are a mage.
- Use field manuals that you find in zones for a regime that will give you extra xp, gold and tabs.
- Pick up your mission.
- Set up Macros: mysticmines.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=setting&thread=155
